alright he's a very good drummer... A VERY GOOD drummer ... but where's the music in all the stick flipping that he keeps on doing ?! I mean he's good, but instead of focusing on making his beats more sensible, he keeps moving his sticks in a confusing way that even distracts me from the solo itself .... besides, his bass drum SUCKS, especially when he goes all double-bass crazy allover it ....... nice drumming, but a dumb video though ........

the tricks are really cool but just to be completely honest the actual beats kinda suck...it's great that you can hit a whole bunch of drums but when you go into the massive tom fills all I hear is noise...there has to be some foundational beat behind it and I don't hear it....but the visual aspect is good.....

For everyone who insists on comparing him to other drummers:

THATS NOT THE POINT.

His style is about technical and rudimental mastery. The point is for someone to take the torch and run with it in their own style to do something new and amazing. For example, take his 17 hi-hats and apply that to a jazz groove (somehow, don't ask me how). He's not here competing with Dave Weckl or anyone else, he's exploring the technical side of drumming.

You say rock doesn't have to be people throwing sticks around...nobody said rock had to be anything. This is by far pretty goddamn impressive. He not only keeps in time on the kit, but also in the visualizations he's creating with his stick tricks.

But you probably wouldn't understand, seeing as how on your profile you seem to have pissed off a bunch of people by making blind sided judgments.

You need to get out more, and maybe try some stuff yourself before you speak against anything.

The point that I was trying to make is that its hard to keep a rhythm on the drums while at the same time keeping in perfect time with your visualizations as well. But I checked your profile to see if you were a drummer, maybe listed in your interests? But now I think you're just some 13 year old trying to be hardcore that said his age was 38 just so he could view the more "adult-oriented" stuff on here.
90% of these people are actual drummers, including myself, and they know how hard this is.

A rudimental control like the one spotted by guys like Buddy Rich and pipe/DIC drummers in general is something beyond what I see Lang playing. Maybe Jojo Mayer, that guy really worked his ass off to develop very fast, consistent, clean and sustained strokes and hand technique. I'm more impressed by Mayer's "secret weapons..." DvD than by Lang's. But thats just my particular understanding of technique, since I'm a drummer myself and I'm always practising my rudiments. But thats all.

The best time to work on stick tricks is when your wrist's are tired. You just feel it, its a natural progression. If you practice alot, its a natural progression.....6-8 hours a day ,40 hours a week, all consuming....You just might look half as good.

Unfortunately these days most people want to see the cool tricks and the drummers are spending less time mastering the rhythms, and more time learning the tricks. however i think that a little bit of showing off is fun as long as you can keep up a good beat. the drummer at the last concert i went to kept throwing in these twirls and he wasn't even very good at them and he had trouble keeping the beat while doing them. it was not very entertaining.

Relax man. Stop trying to find the holy grail in everything. The truth of the matter is that there isn't anything that hasn't been played before. There are different techniques and approaches that makes it creative. Both Jojo and Thomas have very fast, strong and consistant foot work. Yet, their technique is different and effective so there's something to learn from both sides. You may even find a new technique that works for you between the two. Creativity is about being open-minded.
