darkness darkness, the youngbloods

Fantastic. Didn't expect that, wow.

(and if we all post enough comments it will knock the person who kinda missed the point of this off of the front page. you can lead someone to art/music, but you can't make them think...)

What a voice. Unique.

Excelente tema, gracias

Last OT post here - Fact - Nixon was a hardcore, documented and self-admitted Hawk (as well as a crook despite his protest) who had culpability for getting the US into the war as VP and as President was directly responsible for keeping the US in for 4 more years. There were hawks and doves in both parties so to say it was only Democrats is false and ludicrous, but Nixon, the Republican president has at least 4 years blood on his impeached hands. Yes Nixon is a source of shame upon shame..

thank you :)

I've been looking for this song EVERYWHERE. It's so brilliant. Why is it not more available? Anyway, thanks for uploading..... thanks A LOT!

Dude. Prozac. Check it out.

Liking both C. Daniels and JCY..the only connections I can see are: males, mammals, living, Terran...all else is 180 out, to my mind...response to Canyons, btw.

How about that?

Well, CWSiler, how about... What took so long? Generally, some Liberal injects something as astute as that (or as insightful as "racist" or "Nazi," or some other unintelligible discharge featuring the phrase "Bush lied," or the word "Halliburton," or both) at the first sign of facts being brought into a discussion.

What kept ya?
Long line at Starbuck's?

awesome song, so contagious. there's also a very good cover by robert plant.

I love this song. Listened to it when it was new and it still sounds great. Thanks for the posting...and great vid too!

iwait4u - If these are your artworks, I think you should consider going back on the medication. Not a criticism, just a suggestion. I'm a little worried. But one of my favorite songs, so thanks!

Darkness, darkness. Amazing lyrics to a beautiful song..love The Youngbloods

it is posted

Awesome song, awesome performance. Thanks very much.

I love this song. I listened to "Elephant Mountain" until I knew every word of every song. What a great band!

this song ended the intense anti-war flick "purple haze' it shook my young soul . It helped me say 'no' to the sick old men who'd use the young and poor as blood soaked pawns

basically your saying you are a coward right? I joined.

Thank you so much for posting this!
I remember walking to my local record store to buy the 45 rpm single, and literally wearing it out.
Was most probably recorded in the 60's, but the single wasn't released until 1970, peaking at #86 in May of that year.

So fucking what. That just proves you are a pawn and willing to be led around by the war mongers who run our country. get a life I'm proud I ducked the draft and have no regrets what so ever.

This song is written about Pain and i think the person who puts a video out is entitled to put their own art and thoughts to the lyrics of the song..I have had this video in my favourites for quite a long time now and i also love this track...Peace...and Respect....:)

it's the first song/first side on the "elephant mountain" album/cd. you can get the best of album that viperam57 suggests but if you can find this one, it's a fantastic album.

I remember my parents listening to this awesome music. considering the general decline of modern music, I appreciate it even more. Thanks!!

so beautiful.
5 stars!!!
thank you

Robert Plant sing it much better

jesse colin young ,as good or better than get together . to my sweet college bostonian days

Brilliant.

My apologies, sir, you're right. I looked him up on Wikipedia--no mention of service. I'd heard the comment from a DJ one night. One more 'urban legend' down the tubes. Perhaps like you and me, he had friends and brothers there. About the song, Wikipedia sez: "During the Vietnam war, it was considered an "anthem" to the soldiers for it describe what they felt while in the jungles." Peace.

And, by the way, HemlockHolyMan, I am so envious that you saw the Youngbloods, Country Joe & The Fish, and Iron Butterfly, all in one. Daggum it!

I know how much kids hate having old farts talk about the past, but LOL. In high school they used to show us films with anti drug messages, like this one and jefferson airplane's white rabbit. When I heard this I HAD TO GET a GUITAR! Elephant Mountain went out of print almost immediately because of label and other music biz problems. Took me decades to find it. It's on a great underground collection of songs and KSAN-FM shows and transcripts called Best of Underground Radio. Plant can't do it.

Nice one. From one agnostic to another, I wish it had occurred to me to use that line years ago. Oh well you know what they say about agnostics...ha,ha,

I love this version but (for me) the best version is by Richie Havens, his voice is powerful and he sings from the heart. Robert Plant's isn't bad either although they both tweaked the lyrics a bit. It's a great song.

FANTASTIC song. I about blew the speakers out of the family Chevelle whenever this came on!
For a different version try Lisa Torban (sp?).

You can find it on The Best of The Youngbloods.

it wasnt a name calling for him NOT JOINING A WAR, it was for his attitude. I regret making that comment because there were a goodly number of gay men and women who lost their lives and or sanity in that war or as a result of that war. And each and every one of them has more honor and integrity than mr I am proud to have dodged the draft....

yeah, now you are a man only if you are taken to a war and shoot some muthafakers, i wish my country had a war so i could join damn! thats why we are so screwed, because of that part of USA who think like that, or think what they are told to think

Jesse wrote this when I was a soldier in Vietnam but he was never there

this brings back memories...... what a great song.....

One Of Thier Best Thx

Revisionist? Have you actually read MacNamara's book? Have you read the Congressional Records that clearly show Dean Rusk and MacNamara as the architects? Capitalization screaming doesn;t make your point any less mistaken.

Brings back old memories

sorry for my engrish, I have to say you ascended a categorie for admitting your mistake (just a few people can do that), and i guess that some people will be against war and some people just wont, and litle can be done to stop them, but who knows anything can happen byebye

While I salute your empathy for wishing to have been there to welcome soldiers home and offering it now but I don't understand feeling ashamed unless you voted for Nixon. The peace accord of 1970 was virtually identical to the one finally signed in 1974. Nixon, Rusk, MacNamara & others kept the war going for 4 more years, MacNamara now agrees it was a horrible mistake. I never was against soldiers, just the war profiteers. This song reflects the pain of the times and we all played our parts

To set the record straight about your superfluous notion that you inexplicably shared about the 1970 and '74 peace accords, I simply presented RELEVANT facts of history as they are. If you want to dispute the FACTUAL accuracy of anything I presented, feel free to state your case... rather than just spew a lot of desultory junk with a few familiar names..

I'm with you Chinacatsunflower and did exactly the same thing in 1969 when those old men tried to turn me into a killer for corporate amerika.Nancy Regan had it right when she told the kids to "just say no" to bad she had the wrong cause!

Saw these guys back in 69 or 70 in Oklahoma City. 3 Deal line up, Youngbloods, Country Joe & The Fish and Iron Butterfly. ROCKEN Concert!

This song has so much emotion. Thank you for posting it.

Of course, Prozac hadn't been inveted when this song came out. I remember those days myself, and I can't escape the feeling that Prozac would have helped. Maybe not then, but certainly now.

Thanks for posting this. Haunting. We all feel this way one time or another in life...I remember when this was new...played it over and over...

Wasn't about Prozac. It was about the war in VietNam. We were living in dark times. This song was covered by several groups, including Mott the Hoople. I found out only recently that the peace sign actually emnerged in 1958 as a Brit support for nuclear disarmament. Imagine that. I thought I was cool in 1968, but I was living on a principal that was 10 years old at the time. Still, it was fun to march on Washington in 1969 and to protest the War. Darkness Darkness was one of our anthems.

The song was good, but the video is another story.

Why did last fm edit out Charlie Daniels' searing fiddle solo at the beginning? That's so wrong. And thank you but the guitar solo DOES NOT SUCK. It kicks ass. One of the best ever in a rock song. 60's music was meant to hear while taking controlled substances. If you hate it, you're too straight. Wish I could find a Stereo version of it somwhere. Dear Micro, sorry, meant no offense. I'm an old fart, too. I was a BIG KSAN and KMET mighty Met fan long ago. God bless us everyone. how I miss 'em.

Thanks for posting this, and thanks for the lyrics too!!!!
what a voice, what a song saw them in Berkeley in a park in 1970, free concert.

What's with all the politics, war mongering and name calling? This should be all about the music! There are so many great versions of this song...stop the bickering and listen instead!

One of my favorite songs but WHAT THE HELL is going on with this video?

This song is kind of disturbing to me to listen to- it was playing when I took an overdose of sleping pills and slit my wrist (I was a very troubled teenager). Thank GOD I got help and got my depression under control!!!

Look, mr simplistic thinking or mr bad engrish), I am not going to say the viet nam war was good , or even correct, in any way shape or form. My comments were deleted not by me (so much for free speech in the usa), although I was going to delete my comment, and even apologize to the person's whose account this is..

CRUSHPROOF!!!!

While we all love Plant, he cannot surpass Jesse's original acheivement here...Awesome!!

O dudes below go clean your spex
Your comments do the mind perplex
I loved this vid right from the start
It's message rooted in my Heart (.x.)

Abso-fuckin-lutely Brilliant!!!!

Ann Wilson does this song pretty good justice on her recent solo album.

She played it close to the original for good reason.......the original is smokin great!

FACT - There was no Vietnam war under Ike - no U.S. combat troops there during Ike's entire presidency.

FACT - Nixon ended the war -- Dem-controlled congress refused to fund planned, non-military support..

Here's how your "wiki" spins it:

Martin pleaded with Washington to dispatch $700 million in emergency aid to bolster the regime and help it mobilize fresh military reserves. But American public opinion had soured on this conflict halfway around the world.

Transparent BULL SHIT.

This song will always have a place way down deep in my soul...Way ahead of their time, in my estimation. Wish the kids today could have a listen....

Mingin video but what a song. Is there a connection to Charlie Daniels (the devil went down to georgia) with this band?

In May 1970 I hooked up with the hottest girl at South Eugene High School. This song played all night on her record player. God bless 45's.

DeeDrake: You're right!! The oldies stations always play the A side of this single (Get Together) but NEVER play th B side (this great song). I still have the single and it was dubbed a "double sided hit" which wasn't very common back then.

You are so full of shit Cuntontos. You don't know what you are talking about with that fat uneducated mouth. You should go to school and find out about history before you try sharing your bent version of it with others. Shut up already...we get the fact that you are ignorant. We don't need to learn any more from you. Maybe your mama is interested, but we don't care.

What a terrific combination of video effects, art, and music.
This is one of the best original videos I've seen on Youtube. Thanks for sharing it.

Search me, I'm agnostic, I'm the last to know.

welcome home pvince51, wished i could've been there to welcome you then. I'm ashamed for all of us.

Np. It has always been a favorite. Think "edge of sadness" and "depths of fear" struck a chord with many.

I listened to this song many times at The Great Divide in Denver on their phenomenol jukebox circa 1970. One of the songs I remember falling in love with my ex-wife to

Tell the truth. I'm on Candid Camera, right?

The only thing more stereotypically liberal/Dem/neo-COMM/progressi ve/knee-jerk/moonbat about your post than its overuse of non-creative name calling and proportionally inverse absence of facts or logic...

IS THAT SCREEN NAME, "SIERRA"!!!

Shouldn't you be tree-sitting somewhere and doing primal screams in mourning for the endangered suckerfish?

"Sierra" -- What a hoot!

You really are pathetic

great song ! do you have Quicksand ? love Elephant mountain lp

Timeless tune.

Leaves me with chills.
This is excellent!!!!!
Thank you.
10 stars!

This was on "Elephant Mountain" LP which I think came out in 1969 so single could have been 1970-I'll bet you are right.

Nixon "ending it" from wiki - Richard Nixon and the Joint Chiefs of Staff planned using 3 small tactical nuclear weapons in support of the French. As Vice president Richard Nixon, a so-called "hawk" on Vietnam, suggested that the U.S. might have to "put American boys in" President Eisenhower made American participation contingent on British support, but London was opposed convinced that the political risks outweighed the possible benefits, Eisenhower decided against the intervention.

thats kind of simplistic thinking

great information pak. and i must say i am lucky that my kids who are know young adults thrive off of 'our' music and never get tired of hearing stuff like this. don't underestimate us old farts. LOL... also by the way i worked the the fm radio music in Los Angeles in the mid 70's. what i would give to go back. blessing to you,,,

dude u call someone a homo just for not joining a stupid war and i'm having a simplistic thinking??? your answer kinda reminds me of the answers i used to give when i knew i was wrong at the age of 7

First time I heard this song (1969) it was like a cold wind blowing up my back. It was just afte moving to California. It fit perfectly.

We can not appreciate the light if we have not experienced the dark.

yeah, still love this song... the original is still the best. but the guitar solo sucks.

old men sending the gullible to their doom for some great purpose is nothing new and continues to this day. if no one went they would be short wars. i choose to skip my appointed war- vietnam song relates to how i felt when i received by draft notice. a great tune.

"I am a man of few words..."

You exaggerate. It's reason that distinguishes a man.

"As I stated before GFY"
I hope you don't think of your mom with that mind.

"And bye the way, not a
liberal, just dont like ya,"
That's a shame. You missed your calling.

"yer an idiot"
This from someone who's measured contribution to a discussion is, "GO F YERSELF." Outstanding.

As a favor to us conservatives, would you consider telling people you're a Liberal before you contribute your thoughts?

Don't apologize.

Your spelling of "irrelavent" virtually shouts "Liberal" for you.

Are you finished "stooping" Lightnin'? Or do you have more gems that you'd like to submit for my amusement?

love it

I dont do favors for the politically irrelavent.
Yer lucky I'm even stooping down to attempt communication with ya

Elephant Mountain is a total classic and this has been one of my favorite songs for decades.

How bout this one Contontos
GO F YERSELF

Also... I was going to college in Okla in 1970 and happened to attend an outdoor concert in Norman with the Young Bloods, Iron Butterfly & Country Joe & The Fish.... ROCK'N!

I don't particularly like Oklahoma but for real... they had some excellent artists playing there in the late 60's early 70's. I saw Hendrix with Band of Gypsies there... Outrageous!!! :)

What a revisionist crock of steaming horse shit.

What difference could the Paris Peace Accord have made when a Democrat congress refused the support of S. Nam that the accord was to provide by refusing (sound familiar?) FUNDING!

A war hatched and escalated by Democrats and ended by Nixon, and it's a vote for Nixon that YOU think is deserving of shame?

It's not only shame, BUT THE GUILT AND BLOOD OF MILLIONS OF INNOCENT SOULS ARE ON THE HEADS AND HANDS OF U.S. DEMOCRATS.

I would have loved to hear Green Carnation cover this song.

Whoooaaa...what a mind rape.
I always though Robert Plant's was the original;
It's one of my favorite songs. This tripped me out.

:0

The 60's & 70's was when all rock n roll was made and the Young Bloods were right there at the top. Rock On!

Feel this in my soul! Music today needs this kinda depth and rawness. Fuck MTV!!!

Ooh. I'm in awe. Tell us, Great Leader. What are your plans for the future of mankind?

I am a man of few words.........
As I stated before GFY
And bye the way, not a liberal, just dont like ya, yer an idiot

Much experience at attempting to have a lucid exchange with liberals has taught me to EMPHASIZE key words in order to hold their attention. Of course, sometimes, somehow the capital letters only push their buttons and they go off on tangents.

At any rate, I was quite clear as to what assertion of yours I was challenging, as I was also as to the nature of my challenge.

I would ask you to be as clear and on-topic.

Isdmadman - finally someone who remembers "purple haze", one of my very favorite movies, but nobody i know has seen it!

Jesse Colin Young is a great talent
his Voice blows everyone away.
Baddest cat in the jungle

Don't worry--he is. He lives in Hawaii now with his family growing organic coffee and teaching music at the Kona Pacific Waldorf school. He's got a great website.

Jesse wrote this when he was a soldier in Vietnam.

lol you fucking homo

Flashback -- S.F. 1969. Elephant Mountain. Oh what a year it was.

Great melody, great changes, great lyrics and one hell of a lead guitar break. Been a favorite of mine for well over 30 years. I wonder if Jesse is still making music. I sure hope so.

you should check out the album elephant mountain. :)

thanks for ruining a great song with a video of a rotten birthday cake with dead animals in it

....my flea collar is getting weak..please hurry....!

"Respect for opposing opinions is the essence of the freedoms that our troops were and are fighting and dying for."

You almost make a worthwhile statement there. All you need is to qualify "opposing opinions" with the additional adjective REASONED, and you're almost there.

To wit:

I can OPINE that the sun is pushed around the Earth every day by plump grandmothers in pink tutus, but without evidence, that's no better nonsense than most of what gets flung about these pages -- Yours included.

poets take pain and make beautiful music.

A key song and Band from the Historic 1960's. This is representative of the times musically. Thanks Jesse.
